This Job Reports to: Training Officer

Job Summary

Cadet is a non-paid position and is the starting point in becoming a firefighter. At this position no guarantee of future employment is made. Cadets are covered under the Authority’s workman’s compensation insurance for injuries occurring only during training sessions approved by the Authority. Costs for any training shall be born by the Cadet. Upon completion and state certification of the Academy the Authority will reimburse the Cadet for the costs of the class and any books. Cadets are not paid to attend any training classes. Cadet firefighters enrolled in an Authority approved training academy and may respond to an emergency scene to observe and for training purposes.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

  • Respond to fire alarms and other emergency and non-emergency scenes driving only in a non-emergency mode.
  • Be enrolled in an Authority approved MFFTC fire academy.
  • Be physically and mentally fit.
  • Report to required classes and training sessions, takes orders and directions from instructors and Authority employees.
  • Performs ancillary duties/tasks as directed by Authority officers.
  • Maintains a passing grade or percentile in the class.
  • Reports to classes or training sessions on time.
  • Abides by class and Authority rules.
  • Abides by the Authority’s Privacy Policies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Knowledge of the geography, streets and important locations in the Authority.
  3. Possess and maintain a clean driving record.
  4. Ability to work with others.
  5. Posses and maintain a clear criminal record including misdemeanors.
  6. During some training activities cadets may physically exert themselves beyond average, normal modes of a daily work environment.

Working Conditions

  1. Work is frequently preformed in classroom settings and at home.
  2. Work is frequently performed in training scenarios and at times in hazardous situations.
  3. Work is frequently highly stressful mentally and physically.

Reporting Relationship

  1. Reports to the Lead Trainer of the academy and Authority Training Officers.
  2. Cadet Firefighters responding to alarms are to report to the Incident Commander.
  3. Cadets are not to operate in any hazardous area.
