2017 Citizen's Fire Academy

South Haven Area Emergency Services will be conducting its second citizen's fire academy beginning March 15. We are looking for 15 South Haven area residents who would like to learn what it takes to be a firefighter. This is not a certification course, but all students will leave having gained skills that may save a life, along with having a better understanding of the first department's capabilities.

This Academy is held every two years. The first Academy was held in 2015.

The Academy is open to any one 18 years of age or older who lives in the greater South Haven community.

Due to the physical nature of this program, interested parties are strongly encouraged to consult with their physician prior to applying. Physical activities will include, but are not limited to: lifting of heavy tools, wearing heavy equipment, kneeling, crawling, pulling, pushing and having a great time while doing it all.

Classes will be help primarily on Wednesday evenings starting March 15 at 6:30 p.m. and continuing until May 17. Two classes will be held on Saturday mornings (March 18 and May 6).

Skills will include rope rescue, vehicle extrication, fire extinguishers, CPR, home safety inspections and structural firefighting.

The deadline for applying is March 10. Contact Owen Ridley with questions to enroll and obtained an application form – oridley@shaes.org / 269-637-1813.
